Measure and trim with confidence
A few extra minutes upfront saves re-ordering later. Use this checklist before you cut into your runner or turf roll.
Gather your tools
- 25' tape measure
- Fresh utility blades
- Metal straight edge (at least 48")
- Painter's tape
- Work gloves
Measure like a pro
- Measure in two directions to confirm your straight lines. Walls in older homes can wander.
- Note obstacles like vents, electrical panels, or support posts so you can notch around them.
- For angled spaces, measure the longest and shortest sides and sketch a quick diagram.
When in doubt, add 2" to your measurement. You can always shave off the extra, but you can't add length back.
Trim for a clean finish
1. Mark your cut line
Lay the runner or turf face-down. Use painter's tape to mark your cut and write the final measurement on the tape.
2. Score lightly
Hold the straight edge firmly and score once with light pressure. The first pass keeps fibres tidy.
3. Complete the cut
Make a second, deeper pass. For turf, flex the backing open as you cut to see the base clearly.
4. Dry fit
Place the piece in position before trimming additional sides. Check door swings and clearances.
5. Finish edges
Press seams together and, if needed, tape the underside with waterproof gaffer tape for extra security.
Keep offcuts
Store leftover pieces flat or in a tube. They make great doormats or patch kits if a corner ever gets damaged.
