Install turf in a single weekend
This workflow keeps water draining and seams invisible. Plan the cuts, read the safety notes, and keep patience handy—nothing here requires specialized tools.
Prep the surface
- Sweep the surface thoroughly and remove nails or screws that sit proud.
- Let turf relax in the sun for 30 minutes so fibres sit naturally.
- Dry fit all pieces before trimming, ensuring the grain runs the same direction.
Installation steps
1. Trim to size
Roll the turf face-down, mark your measurements with painter's tape, and cut with a sharp blade along a straight edge.
2. Secure the perimeter
On balconies, apply exterior-rated double-sided tape 1" from the edge. On patios, use galvanized staples or concrete screws with washers every 12".
3. Join seams
Butt seam edges together, lift both sides, and apply seam tape adhesive. Press fibres together and brush to blend.
4. Add weight if needed
Brush silica sand or pet-friendly infill into the fibres if wind exposure is high.
5. Final brush
Use a stiff broom to lift fibres upright and check drainage by pouring a jug of water across the surface.
Stay safe and compliant
- Do not block drains or scuppers with tape or adhesive.
- Wear knee pads if you are working on concrete for more than 15 minutes at a time.
- Avoid solvent-based adhesives on rooftop membranes—stick with manufacturer-approved tapes.
Check your building bylaws for balcony coverings—most condos allow turf so long as drains stay clear and the installation is removable.
